Formerly known as Chichast and Kaboodan, the Orumieh Lake is Iran's largest and the world's third-largest salt lake. The lake lies between the provinces of East and West Azarbaijan in northwestern Iran.
It is about 140 kilometers (87 miles) long, and 15-55 kilometers (10-34 miles) wide —, the width varies at different points. The Orumieh Lake is 16 meters (52 feet) deep at its deepest point.
The lake is home to over 100 little islands — none of them inhabitable.
As the lake separates the cities of Orumieh and Tabriz — two major northwestern Iranian cities — it was decided to construct a highway across the Orumieh Lake.Swimming in the Orumieh is recommended by Aquatic therapists, who believe the mineral-rich water of the lake has therapeutic powers.
While there are a number of fine hotels surrounding the lake, many prefer to set up tents and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Urmia Lake has been designated as an international park by the United Nations. The lake occupies a 5700 km2 depression in northwestern Iran. The lake is 20Km far from Urmia (Orumieh) City. At Golmankhaneh harbor, these are coastal beaches ready to welcome travelers. Inside the lake there are numerous beautiful islands where wild beasts and birds live.
The water of this lake, containing natural salts and muds is used by patients who suffer of dermal and rheumatic troubles.
